A community recycling event will offer Lewis County residents an opportunity to recycle several materials and provide proper disposal for others on Saturday, Oct. 11, at the old Meskill Drop Box site, 3127 state Route 6, Chehalis, according to a news release from the Lewis County Department of Public Works.
Computer and television recycling, appliance and scrap metal recycling, yard waste drop off, and household hazardous waste collection will be offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the event, which is being sponsored by the Lewis County Department of Public Works Solid Waste Utility.
Sensitive document shredding will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Attendees are asked not to line up early on the highway and to wait for the event to open. No garbage or paint will be accepted at the event, according to the release.
Customers must be prepared to unload their own vehicles.
All flat screen televisions, other TVs that are 42 inches or smaller, computer monitors and CPUs will be recycled. Console and cabinet TVs will not be accepted. Each household is limited to two such items.
Drop off of unwanted lawn or pool chemicals, cleaners, motor oil, antifreeze, pesticides or other household chemicals will be offered for free so they can be recycled or disposed of properly. Because this is a remote event, workers will not be able to return containers to customers. Customers must be prepared to leave their containers at the event, the release stated.
Limits and restrictions:
• Containers must be left at the event
• 10 fluorescent or CFL lights
• Automotive fluid: 5 gallons
• 5 gallons of cooking oil
• No containers larger than 5 gallons
• No paint or PaintCare items. Check PaintCare.org to learn about items that are accepted in the PaintCare program as well as PaintCare locations around Lewis County.
Any item that is more than 75 percent metal will be accepted. Drain fluids from motors before recycling. Appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, stoves, washers, dryers, hot water heaters and dish washers are accepted, but there is a limit of two large appliances per household. For microwaves, remove the glass turntable and throw it away prior to the event.
Residents may bring grass clippings, leaves and branches. No plastic bags. Empty the content of yard waste bags into containers and dispose of bags in curbside garbage containers. No noxious weeds.
Customers may bring a maximum of three grocery bags of sensitive documents they would like to have shredded for free. The shredded paper will be taken to a paper recycling facility to be made into new paper.
The event is funded in part by a Local Solid Waste Financial Assistance grant from the Washington state Department of Ecology. For questions, call 360-740-1451 or email swu@lewiscountywa.gov.
