Celebration to Highlight Creation of StoryTrail
The public is invited to join the Mountain View (Randle) Timberland Library staff and U.S. Forest Service rangers noon-1 p.m. Saturday for a celebration of the creation of the TRL StoryTrail along the lower loop of Trail 247, known as the Gifford Pinchot National Forest Woods Creek Watchable Wildlife Trail.
The StoryTrail is a partnership project bringing literacy to the trails. More than a dozen stops along the TRL StoryTrail feature the book “The Big Woods Orchestra” by Guido van Genechten along with informational facts and activities.
To drive to the StoryTrail, from Randle travel south on state Highway 131 (Forest Roads 23 and 25). Veer right in 1 mile at the Y of Forest Road 23 and Forest Road 25. Follow Forest Road 25 for 4.8 miles and arrive at the trailhead and interpretive site on the left at the junction with Forest Road 2305.
The Woods Creek 2.5-mile trail loops through five habitat areas, offering hikers an opportunity to learn about wildlife and the habitat different species need. This is a 4-foot-wide accessible trail with compacted gravel surfacing.
Relatively flat, there are four very short sections where the grade reaches 8 percent. The trail passes through a mixed hardwood conifer forest and breaks into the bright openness of a meadow. From the meadow, the main trail crosses a bridge spanning the wetlands. Facilities include picnic sites and a restroom, all barrier-free.
A-6 Intruder Pilot to Speak at Veterans Museum
Peter Hunt, who spent 10 years in the U.S. Navy as an A-6 Intruder attack pilot, will be the featured speaker during a Desert and Cold War Remembrance Day event Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Museum, Chehalis.
There will be food and music available from noon until 2 p.m. The program will be from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Hunt completed three aircraft carrier deployments to the Persian Gulf, Indian Ocean and Western Pacific during 10 years of active duty. His military awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Air Medals for combat action during Operation Desert Storm.
After leaving the Navy, Hunt worked as a United Airlines pilot until being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2005 at age 43. The father of two adult children, Hunt holds a master’s degree in strategic planning for critical infrastructure from the University of Washington and lives with his wife on Whidbey Island.
The museum is located at 100 SW Veterans Way, Chehalis.
