College Update: Elliott Wraps Career as All-American


There’s a lot of Lewis County athletes competing at the four-year college level. Here’s a look at how a few of them are faring.

Track & Field

Mikel Elliott, a senior from White Pass High School, wrapped up her college track career by placing fourth in the 3,000-meter run on March 7 in Geneva, Ohio, at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Elliott, running for Concordia University, finished in a school-record 9:54.67 to earn her fourth NAIA All-American honor, beating the old school record by nearly 2 seconds.

Elliott also ran a leg on Concordia’s seventh-place distance medley relay team.

Women’s Basketball

Southern Oregon University’s women’s basketball season came to a close in the second round of the NAIA Div. II Tournament Friday morning with a 72-65 loss to Tabor in Sioux City, Iowa. Former Rainier and Centralia College standout Kristen Schoenherr scored 15 points on 6 of 8 shooting in the loss, which ended the Raiders’ season with a 27-5 record. Autumn Durand, a sophomore from Onalaska, added 6 points and seven rebounds. The Raiders routed Robert Morris, 96-61, on Wednesday morning in the first round of tournament. Elma’s Carly Meister led SOU with 25 points, while Schoenherr and Durand each added 10 points. Demi Sahlinger, a sophomore from Napavine, added four assists.


Mack Gaul, a sophomore lefthanded pitcher from Toledo, worked the bottom of the ninth inning for the University of Washington on Feb. 28 in a 17-3 win over North Dakota in Seattle. In the first appearance of his college career, Gaul faced three batters, striking out the first and retiring the next two on pop flies to end the game.

John Pomeroy, a righthanded sophomore pitcher from Mossyrock, struck out the side in the ninth inning to wrap up Oregon State University’s 12-3 win over Portland in Corvallis. Pomeroy worked two innings of relief, striking out three and walking one without allowing a hit or a run in the Beavers’ 10th-straight win. In four appearances this season, Pomeroy has worked 3 ⅔ innings with one hit, three walks and five strikeouts.

Skyler Wheeler, a senior from Napavine, went 1 for 3 with a pair of RBIs for Northwestern College (Iowa) in a 5-3 win in Game 2 of a doubleheader with Indiana Wesleyan last Friday during the Tucson Invitational Games. Wheeler also had two hits and an RBI in the Red Raiders’ 6-1 loss in the first game of the twinbill, and leads NWC with a .426 batting average, six doubles and 16 RBIs. The first baseman has started all 17 games for the 7-10 Red Raiders.


Taylor Hoke, a senior shortstop from Adna, went 1 for 2 for Montana State University-Billings in both games of a doubleheader with St. Martin’s University on Saturday in Lacey, with an RBI in the 9-3 loss in Game 1 and a double in the 5-0 loss in Game 2. Hoke has started all 23 games for the 10-13 Yellowjackets, with a team-high .403 batting average, 29 hits and 21 RBIs.

Dani Wall, a senior infielder from Tenino, went 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs for St. Martin’s University on Monday, during a 9-0 win over Notre Dame de Namur in the first game of a doubleheader. Wall is hitting .361 for the 17-12 Saints, and is second on the team with 18 RBIs and three home runs. Janice Knutz, a junior from Rochester and Centralia College transfer, added an RBI in Monday’s opener.

Dani Braun, a junior from Chehalis, delivered a pinch-hit RBI single that put the University of Washington ahead 2-1 in what would be a 4-2 win on Sunday against Cal State Northridge in the final game of the Husky Classic softball tournament. The win helped No. 19-ranked UW improve to 25-4 on the season.

Parker Pocklington, a sophomore from Centralia, went 2 for 2 with a double and 3 RBIs for the University of Arkansas in an 11-5 win over Missouri State on Thursday in Springfield. Pocklington has started 20 games for the 13-11 Razorbacks, with a .179 batting average and 5 RBIs.

Amanda Woods, a junior from Pe Ell, homered in a 5-3 win for George Fox University in Game 2 of a doubleheader with Linfield on Saturday in McMinnville. Woods is hitting .378 with 13 RBIs for the 12-3 Bruins.
