As the City of Centralia works to complete and adopt its comprehensive plan, the public is encouraged to provide comments on the plan and several ongoing and upcoming projects at an open house Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Borst Park Kitchens.
The open house will cover the comprehensive plan, the climate resiliency plan, the transportation master plan, the Westside Connector plan, and the Hub City Greenways plan. City staff and consultants will be in attendance to listen to public comments and answer questions.
Comprehensive plan topics include land use, housing, environment, economic development, utilities, and the capital facilities plan.
Centralia received a grant from the Washington state Department of Commerce in 2023 to assist in the development of its climate resiliency plan, which aims to build resilience by implementing a mix of preparedness, response and recovery policies. This includes mitigating natural hazards, adapting to unavoidable impacts and restoring natural areas that have degraded that provide key ecosystem services.
The purpose of the transportation master plan is to document the conditions of the transportation system(s) in Centralia while planning for the preservation of an efficient and functional transportation network. The study area includes areas both within city limits as well as the designated urban growth area.
The Westside Connector project entails creating a connection west of Interstate 5 that connects Harrison Avenue to state Route 6 to improve community connectivity, emergency services, response time, and multimodal access to the hospital, services, schools and parks.
Hub City Greenways aims to create neighborhood activity hubs centered around local schools and other key facilities to encourage small-scale neighborhood establishments such as activated school fields, cafes, coffee shops, little markets or food carts, for example. The plan also envisions another 25 miles of trails within the city on top of its approximately 8 miles of trails.
