Chung, Han qualify for state tournament

W.F. West’s Justin Chung and Javyn Han qualified for the state tournament on Thursday, earning top four spots at the district tournament to claim their bids.

Centralia’s Jacoby Corwin nabbed the second singles alternate spot, while Tumwater’s Cody Lambert and Kaleb Peterson and Centralia’s Connor O’Dell and Kadin Yeung took the two doubles alternate spots.

Chung made it all the way to the singles final, topping Columbia River’s Ixiz Chu 6-0, 1-0 in the first round (Chu medically forfeited after the first game in the second set), and besting Fort Vancouver’s Andrew Walcyzk 6-2, 6-0.

He ultimately fell to Columbia River’s Lucas Walburn in the district championship 6-3, 6-1, but claimed the district’s No. 2 seed at the state tournament.



Han rebounded from a first-round loss to Walcyzk by topping Corwin 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to earn the district’s No. 4. Seed.

Corwin initially defeated Mark Morris’ Marco St. Martin-Shook in the first round of the tournament 6-4, 6-1, but St. Martin-Shook later took the rematch in three sets to claim the top alternate spot.

The state tournament doesn’t take place until May 24-25, and it will be played at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle.
