Chehalis Man Retires After 30-Year Career in Marines, Ranked Master Gunnery Sergeant

Master Gunnery Sergeant John E. Freitag, of Chehalis, is retiring and returning to his hometown after serving for more 30 years in the United States Marine Corps. 

Freitag enlisted in the Marine Corps in February 1988 and graduated recruit training at MCRD San Diego, California. 

During his career, Freitag has lived in Hawaii, Bahrain and a variety of other locations.

Freitag had an eye for logistics and worked on several operations in support of humanitarian efforts, emergency disaster preparedness, and security exercises. He has also served on numerous hazardous duty deployments, according to his family.



Freitag also participated in numerous trainings throughout his career as well and university full time. He received a Bachelor of Arts in management and human resources in 2016.

“To say he is an exemplary example is an understatement,” his wife, Angela Freitag, wrote to The Chronicle. 

His personal decorations include one Legion of Merit, two Meritorious Service Medals, one Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal and five Navy/Marine Corp Achievement Medals.
