A Chehalis man faces a felony harassment charge after he was arrested Monday for allegedly trespassing onto a person’s yard while carrying multiple knives.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Latrell A. Hughes, 21, allegedly threatened to kill the arresting deputy, whom he referred to as a “donut.”

Hughes is charged with one count of felony harassment, a Class C felony punishable by up to five years in prison. He also faces two gross misdemeanor counts of harassment and one misdemeanor count of second-degree criminal trespass.

Hughes made a preliminary appearance in Lewis County Superior Court on Tuesday. A judge set bail at $100,000 cash or bond and granted the defense’s request for a competency evaluation. A competency review hearing is scheduled for July 30.

According to the affidavit, a Lewis County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to a caller’s report that Hughes was screaming while in the man’s yard off of U.S. Highway 12 near Mary’s Corner.

Hughes had reportedly been trespassed from the property in 2022.

According to the affidavit, a Washington State Patrol trooper arrived first and found an “agitated” Hughes, who was allegedly carrying several knives.

The deputy arrived next and saw Hughes on the shoulder of the road. He recognized Hughes from previous run-ins. The deputy removed two sheathed knives from Hughes’ belt.

While Hughes was detained, the deputy spoke with the caller, who showed the deputy footage of a suspect — allegedly Hughes — in the man’s yard.

As the deputy searched Hughes, Hughes allegedly made a number of “lewd comments” to another deputy on hand.

On the way to the Lewis County Jail, Hughes allegedly told the arresting deputy “that he was going to kill him and it did not matter that he had a gun,” according to the affidavit.

At one point, Hughes allegedly called the deputy a donut, and again threatened to kill him.

At the jail, Hughes allegedly said would remember the deputy’s face.

According to the affidavit, the deputy told prosecutors he’d “dealt with Mr. Hughes on multiple calls and was aware that he had been arrested for pulling a knife on a couple at Walmart.”

The deputy reportedly said he believed Hughes would “attempt to act on his threats” if the two saw each other again in public.
