A Chehalis man is in stable condition after a neighbor reportedly shot him in the chest during a dispute in the 600 block of Northwest Quincy Place on Friday, the Chehalis Police Department reported Monday morning.

The alleged shooter, a 32-year-old man, self-reported the incident to the Chehalis Police Department at approximately 8:11 p.m. on Aug. 26. The man reportedly told 911 dispatchers “his neighbor has been harassing him and came at him with a pipe so (he) shot him,” according to the Chehalis Police Department’s call log.

No one else was involved in the incident, according to the Chehalis Police Department.

The man told officers he had placed the gun on his counter and would be waiting outside the building for officers to arrive, according to the call log.

Officers with the Chehalis Police Department immediately responded alongside officers with the Centralia Police Department and deputies with the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies and officers provided emergency life-saving care for the victim while waiting for medics to arrive on Friday, according to Chehalis City Councilor Kevin Carns, who was on a ridealong with a responding Chehalis police officer at the time of the shooting.

“I’m just so proud of our cops and our sheriff (deputies),” Carns told The Chronicle on Monday. “They hands-down saved that guy’s life that night.”

The shooter was arrested at the scene and was booked into the Lewis County Jail just before 9:40 p.m. on Friday for alleged first-degree assault with a firearm. Bail was set at $250,000 over the weekend and the Chehalis Police Department referred first-degree assault charges against the assailant to the Lewis County Prosecutor’s Office. However, the prosecutor’s office determined Monday afternoon that it would decline to file charges.

While the shooter has been identified by the Chehalis Police Department, The Chronicle is not releasing his name because he has not been charged with a crime.

Law enforcement were still actively investigating the case as of Monday morning.
