Chehalis Freshmen Encouraged to Self-Reflect During Special Activity Day

In an effort to encourage freshmen students to self-reflect, learn to stay away from unhealthy choices and grow as student learners, the Chehalis School District held a “Freshman Fest” on Oct. 12.

“We want all our freshmen students to feel like they belong and know they have people here to support them,” said Freshman Support and AVID Counselor Rebecca Smith. “We also want them to have opportunities to self-reflect and grow, and we hope this event will help them see who they are, who they want to become and who can support them.”

All freshmen were rotated through three activities on Wednesday:

  • A challenge ropes course helmed by leaders with the Cispus Learning Center and W.F. West teachers. “The goal is to help them learn that they can lean on, support and grow together over the next four years through the successes and challenges of high school,” said the district in a news release.
  • Small AVID workshop-style groups focused on the importance of note taking and organization. Students were also encouraged to reflect on their personality and contemplate the things that are important to their lives.
  • A presentation by Gabe Stajduhar with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, joined by Chehalis School District Safety Officer Todd Thornburg. The presentation focused on current unhealthy patterns in youth and ways to stay away from unhealthy choices.
