Chehalis Fire Department Captain Robert Gebhart, a 38-year veteran with the department, was honored during Monday’s Chehalis City Council meeting after officially hanging up his helmet and uniform for good on Sunday.

Gebhart, who began working in Chehalis on March 11, 1987, received a plaque from Chief Adam Fulbright and Mayor Tony Ketchum while surrounded by numerous current and former coworkers, who filled Chehalis City Hall to support the longtime captain.

“It’s not every day we get a chance to recognize nearly four decades of service to one community, but today, we stand together to honor a man who has devoted 38 years of his life to the city of Chehalis,” Fulbright said. “Captain Gebhart has shown what it means to serve with integrity, strength and heart. His fingerprints are on every part of Chehalis Fire Department, from the training grounds to the fire grounds, from the front seat of the engine to the chief’s office, where he served as interim chief two times.”

Fulbright said Gebhart, as a longtime training officer, helped firefighters build confidence and sharpen their skills, as well as turn probationary employees into professional firefighters.

“When others needed leadership, you stepped up. When the city needed stability and leadership, you answered that call,” Fulbright said. “You have earned a deep respect, and you leave behind a legacy to be proud of, one that will last long after your turnouts are hung up. Capt. Gebhart, on behalf of the City of Chehalis, your brothers and sisters in the fire service, and your community that you’ve protected for nearly four decades, thank you.”

Ketchum presented the plaque to Gebhart on behalf of the Chehalis City Council.

“With deepest gratitude, thank you for 38 years of service. Your wavering commitment, leadership and sacrifice have left a long lasting impact on the department, the community and all who have had the privilege to serve beside you,” Ketchum read. “Thank you for a career defined by honor, courage and excellence.”

Gebhart received a standing ovation from those in the room before briefly thanking his family and the community.

“Thank you. It’s been an honor and a privilege,” Gebhart said.

The Chehalis Fire Department also welcomed a new firefighter paramedic in Jesse Pearson during the meeting. He began his service as a volunteer reserve for Chehalis in October 2024 and successfully completed the Lewis County Regional Fire Academy in May. Pearson recently retired from a 20-year career in the U.S. Army.
