The Chehalis-Centralia Airport has received the Airport Infrastructure Grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to conduct an environmental assessment for future construction of the Northeast Apron location.

The Chehalis City Council unanimously voted Monday to execute the FAA grant offer to allow the airport to proceed with the required environmental assessment for the project, which will expand airport capacity and support future economic development in the region.

The total project cost is an estimated $247,531, with 95% of that, or $235,155, coming from the FAA grant. The airport will match the remaining 5%, or $12,376, provided from capital improvement funds. The city’s general fund is not anticipated to be impacted.

The Chehalis-Centralia Airport Master Plan identifies the need for the development of the Northeast Apron to expand aircraft parking and accommodate future growth in aviation activity.

Before the project’s future design and construction, the environmental assessment will evaluate potential environmental impacts, consider alternatives and provide documentation necessary for the FAA’s environmental determination.

Additionally, the roof replacement project of Hangar K at the airport is complete, and the city council unanimously voted to close out the project and accept it as complete.

Hangar K is one of the airport’s leased hangars, providing revenue to the airport and storage for aircraft and aviation-related equipment. Over time, the roof experienced significant wear, with leaks developing in multiple areas. Temporary repairs were made in the past, but the continued deterioration required a full roof replacement to prevent further water intrusion and potential structural damage.

The total cost of the roof replacement was $42,477.
