Last week, Centralia golf coach Hal Gronseth received a call from his son Macoy, the girls golf coach at Aberdeen.
Macoy Gronseth relayed to his dad that the Bobcats had lost a match by just one point. Hal Gronseth responded that he had never heard of anyone losing by just one point.
That rare occurrence happened again on Monday, when Hal’s Tigers topped Macoy’s Bobcats 71-70.
It’s just the second time the two have coached against each other, the first happening when Centralia topped Aberdeen in the two teams first meeting back in March.
“It’s pretty cool to do that,” Hal Gronseth said. “He’s done a nice job over there. I root for him, but I didn’t want him to beat us. So that one point was a good one point.”
Tess McMurry and Corin Meek both scored 18 points, while Lily Ferch added 16 and Lyla Aumiller tallied 14. Melissa Baine and Sydney Stiger both scored five, but only five of the ten combined points counted towards the team’s top-five total.
Aberdeen was led by Presley Stone, who scored 19, and Kennedy Kolodzie and Harnoor Jandu, who both scored 16. Trinity Stone and Shea Dunlap combined for another 19.
Centralia will face Tumwater on Tuesday before wrapping up its regular season on Thursday against W.F. West. Both of those matches are at Riverside.
