Five Centralia wrestlers who placed at Mat Classic XXXV at the Tacoma Dome on Feb. 17 and a golfer who has qualified to compete in the state championships were recognized at a Centralia School Board meeting on Wednesday.
The Centralia High School girls wrestling team placed sixth overall as a team at the competition, which consisted of multiple classifications and a total of 70 schools competing, according to Centralia Athletic Director Tim Ahern.
In the 100-pound bracket, Centralia wrestlers Luna Martinez-Arevalo and Jocelyn Navarro placed third and fourth, respectively. Eva Reinitz placed fourth in the 115-pound bracket, and Ramona Reinitz placed second in the 110-pound bracket.
Ahern called Ramona Reinitz’s match “unbelievable,” recalling how her match took place at the same time fellow Centralia wrestler Antionio Campos wrestled for a state championship.
Campos, who was also recognized by the school board on Wednesday, won his match in the 120-pound bracket to be named state champion.
Reinitz was initially down 6-1, but fought her way up to 8-8 by the end of the match.
A referee’s judgment call ultimately cost Reinitz the winning points, Ahern said, dropping her to second place in her bracket.
“She is a fighter. She is a freshman. She’s got three more opportunities to get it and I know she’s going to get it,” Ahern said of Reinitz.
Also honored by the school board on Wednesday was Centralia High School senior Von Wasson, who has qualified to compete in state golf championships in May and recently signed on to golf for University of California, Riverside.
He aims to become a PGA golfer someday, Ahern said.
“That means I’m going to get to caddy for him one day on tour,” Ahern joked.
