An 18-year-old Shelton man has died after reportedly being struck by a train at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday, March 9, in Centralia, according to a news release from the Centralia Police Department.

Officers initially responded to the area of Fourth Street and Tower Avenue following a report of a loud party and possible gunshots, according to the release.

“A few minutes later, another call was made to dispatch from a different reporting party advising that a male had been seriously injured by a train,” police stated. “Officers responded to the area of the railroad tracks and B Street where they discovered that an 18-year-old male had sustained life-threatening injuries.

According to police, several citizens discovered the injured man and began rendering aid to him.

Officers and deputies from the Centralia Police Department and the Lewis County Sherriff’s Office arrived and administered life-saving measures, according to the release.

“The victim was conscious at the time but was unable to provide a coherent statement,” police stated. “He did not have any injuries consistent with gunshots.”

The man, who was not identified by police, was transported to Providence Centralia Hospital before being airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he died.

“These two incidents have been determined to have been related and their connection is being investigated,” police stated. “No further information will be released at this time. Anyone with information related to this case is encouraged to contact the Centralia Police Department.”

An earlier news release on the incident was provided in the police department’s Sunday morning press memo.

“A citizen called in reporting a possible gunshot victim had been located, but then advised the victim may have been struck by a train,” the memo stated. “Police arrived on scene a short time later to find an 18-year-old male, from Shelton, sustained serious injuries to his arms after being ran over by a slow moving train. The initial investigation indicated the male likely tried crawling under the train when he was struck. Centralia Police Detectives were called out and are still investigating the case at this time.”
