Centralia parks and trails, Borst Park drive-thru lights closed due to high winds

Out of an abundance of caution for public safety, the City of Centralia Parks and Recreation department announced the temporary closure of all parks and trails effective at 10 a.m. Wednesday due to anticipated impacts from high winds.

In addition, the Borst Lights drive-thru display is canceled Wednesday evening.

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for the area between 10 a.m. and  7 p.m., with south winds between 20 to 35 mph and gusts between 50 to 60 mph expected. The Weather Service indicates that people should avoid being outside in forested areas and around trees and branches.

High winds may cause tree branches to break loose and highly saturated soils will allow for an enhanced risk of tree damage and uprooting.

The facilities are expected to be back open during regular times beginning at 7 a.m. Thursday. Borst Lights will reopen for its last night between 5 and 9 p.m. Thursday.

“The safety of our residents and visitors is our top priority,” Amy Buckler, deputy city manager and parks director. “We know it’s especially disappointing to close Borst Lights tonight, but these conditions pose a risk of falling trees and other hazards. We urge everyone to stay home, stay safe and avoid all park areas until the weather event has passed and the areas can be properly inspected and cleared.”
