Centralia Gets Grant for Flood Supplies

The City of Centralia was recently awarded a grant from the Legislature’s Flood Control Assistance Account Program (FCAAP) to purchase additional flood supplies.

The FCAAP grant comes in at a total of $17,000, but the city is responsible for a 20% match, which means the state is granting $13,600, and the city will be matching $3,400.

Public Works Director Kim Ashmore told the Centralia City Council on Feb. 8 that the city didn’t have enough “road closed” signs and barricades for the amount of street closures it attempted to implement during the January flood events.

There were also not enough water pumps to protect critical areas in the city, Ashmore said.

The city will use the grant funds to purchase four water pumps, 100 barricades and 30 “road closed” signs as well as 30 “water over roadway” signs.

“The additional supplies that will be purchased through this grant will better prepare the City for future flood events to protect the health and safety of our City residents,” stated a council meeting agenda report.

The grant was applied for on Jan. 8, and the council approved the grant’s receipt on Feb. 8.
