Centralia College to Host Southwest Washington Chess Championships; Students Encouraged to Sign Up

Posted

The Southwest Washington high school and middle school chess championships are set to be held on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2023 at Centralia College. Middle and high school students of all skill levels are invited to participate.

The high school championship will include both team and individual chess matches and winning teams will qualify to play in the 57th annual Washington State High School Chess Team Championships, which will be held on March 4 at Stanwood High School.

In the past, high school teams would qualify for the state championship by winning their local high school chess league. Last March, regional qualifying tournaments were introduced to provide a direct path to the state championships without a high school chess league.

Entry into the tournaments is free courtesy of the Washington High School Chess Association and the Chess Enrichment Association, but advanced registration is required.

Anyone wishing to play must reside in Washington south and west of King County.
