The Centralia College men’s soccer team won its first game of the season on Saturday, taking down Pierce College 3-2 in the NWAC opener on the turf at Bob Peters Field.
Alan Cox got the Trailblazers on the board in just the ninth minute, and the score remained 1-0 until Pierce tied the game in the 64th.
It didn’t take long for CC to get back on top, as Carlos Angel Hernandez scored just five minutes later, and Orlando Benavidez Jr. doubled the advantage another seven minutes later.
A Pierce free kick cut the lead to one in the 89th minute, but the Trailblazers were able to hold off a potential equalizer until the final whistle blew.
Rico Ewell finished with 12 saves in net for CC, while Javier Silva, Daemian Guzman, and Owen Jacobs logged assists.
CC (1-4, 1-0 NWAC) will be back at home on Wednesday for a non-conference matchup against Tacoma Community College.
Volleyball drops two of three at Highline Tournament
The Centralia College volleyball team lost two of its three games in Des Moines over the weekend, losing in five sets to Southwestern Oregon, beating Highline in four, and losing to Skagit Valley in three.
Across the three games, Meleseini Hutchings tallied 50 kills and 34 digs, while Paige Miller added 37 kills and Avery Starr dished out 108 assists.
Lyndzie Filla added 21 digs, and Cadence Gumanas added 31 digs and 13 kills.
CC (5-3) will be back in Centralia this weekend for a pair of doubleheaders as part of the Blazer/Clipper Classic. The Trailblazers will face Clark and Bellevue on Friday before playing Everett and Mt. Hood on Saturday.
