CC Baseball: Trailblazers pick up two splits against Vikings

The offense was timely in the opener and cold in the nightcap, one of the factors in the Trailblazers splitting a doubleheader versus the Vikings on Saturday afternoon. Centralia took Game 1 10-6 while Big Bend nabbed a 5-1 verdict in Game 2.

The win in the opener snapped a four-game skid for Centralia (4-8). It plated four runs in the top of the third to break 1-1 tie then added three runs in the fifth and after Big Bend scored two in the sixth, the Blazers got those runs back in the seventh.

Finn Still danced around three walks and seven hits to secure the win in over four innings pitched. Isaiah Anzaldua and Sam Matosich combined for four hits, two doubles and six runs batted in for Centralia. Brady Bloss added three RBIs and scored twice.

The Trailblazers defense succumbed to four errors in the nightcap and Big Bend took full advantage. Just two of the five runs allowed were earned. Two runs apiece for the Vikings crossed home in the second and seventh innings.

Centralia’s lone tally came in the first on a Reuben Ellison RBI single. Tumwater grad Liam Karlson allowed a hit and struck out three in over five innings in a start.

On Sunday, fueled by four innings with at least two runs scoring, the Centralia College baseball team came away with a split against Big Bend, picking up a 13-3 victory in the nightcap of a doubleheader on the road.

The Vikings claimed the opener, 6-3.

Already up 4-0 after three complete innings, the Trailblazers (4-8) tallied three more in the fourth and exploded for six in the fifth. Jack Skelley notched four hits and drove in three runs while Sam Matosich added three RBIs on two hits. Four Centralia pitchers combined to toss 10 strikeouts.

Big Bend was up 3-0 on a three-run fourth, but Centralia cut the margin to one run twice in the fifth and sixth innings. The Vikings posted two insurance runs in the eighth that preserved the win in Game 1.

Jevin Patterson and Reuben Elliston each hit a double and recorded a run. The Trailblazers return to the diamond next weekend at Treasure Valley for a four-game set.
