Casket races draw hundreds to Boo-Coda Saturday afternoon

Hundreds of onlookers lined Main Street in Boo-Coda Saturday afternoon for a scary good time during the town’s annual casket races.

The rules of the ghastly race were simple: the first group to push a derby car-like casket roughly 40 yards down the street to the finish line wins. The Chronicle’s DEADline News and a team from Joe's Place tied for first in the competition, while Rose Chiu Gundersen’s team, Rose for Port, took third.

The Chronicle was represented at the event by reporters Mitchell Roland and Owen Sexton, Photo Editor Jared Wenzelburger, Editor-in-Chief Eric Schwartz and casket pilot Karolyn Schwartz, 7.

Awards also included scariest casket, funniest casket, best costume and most original casket. There was also an award for the team finishing “dead” last.

The event included live music and an attendance of roughly 300 residents and visitors.

Halloween festivities in the town continue this week, with the Boo-Coda Haunted House open from 7 to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 7 to 10 p.m. on Oct. 29, 30 and 31. Boo-Coda will also host a “Thrill the World Dance'' Saturday at 1 p.m.

The town of Bucoda officially changes its name to Boo-Coda every October.
