Caretakers Needed for Schaefer County Park, Claquato Church

Posted

Lewis County officials are still looking for volunteer caretakers for Schaefer County Park and Claquato Church.

During the regular park season — Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend — county officials generally rely on individuals or groups to act as caretakers, responsible for locking and unlocking gates and restrooms, among other duties.

Interested individuals should contact Sarah Hensley at Lewis County Facilities by emailing sarah.hensley@lewiscountywa.gov or calling 360-740-1192.

Schaefer County Park’s 14 acres sit just north of Centralia, and feature a wooden footbridge over the Skookumchuck River, which offers a fishing and swimming hole. The park also includes a covered shelter, volleyball court, playground and picnic tables.

The historic Claquato Church, off state Route 6 near Adna, is one of the oldest churches in the state, and is used for events. The town of Claquato was removed from county records in 1902, according to Chronicle archives.
