Canales beats buzzer to lift Rochester past Hoquiam

Tyson Canales already has a 40-burger this season and the Warriors freshman can add a game-winning bucket to his tally on Wednesday, sinking the 3-pointer that gave them a 67-64 triumph over the Grizzlies.

Up 64-61 with 13 seconds left in regulation, Hoquiam’s star forward Lincoln Neimi drew a foul 37 feet away from the basket and hit all three free throws. Canales dribbled three times, pulled up, drained his shot and sent Rochester (2-14, 2-2 Evergreen) into euphoria.

After starting the season 0-13, Rochester has won two of its last three games.

“I’m not on heart medicine but I might be at the end of the season,” Warriors head coach Caleb Sells said. “Over the moon. We’re doing all the little things coaches preach. The kids are now buying into their roles.”

It was a balanced night by Rochester. Canales led with 17 points while Le’Shawn Hines and Marshall Turnquist each added 10. Four others finished with at least five points. The Warriors erased a seven-point first quarter deficit with 24 points in the second to lead by six.

“Best quarter of the season,” Sells said. “A complete team effort; confidence is flying high.”

Rochester now faces Elma on Friday, tied with Montesano – its opponent next week – for first in the league.
