Burn ban in unincorporated Lewis County to lift on Monday

Posted

On Monday, Oct. 9, Lewis County will lift all seasonal restrictions on outdoor burning for unincorporated county land.

Permits for outdoor burning are still required year-round, but the non-recreational burn ban will end after “careful review of the current and extended weather forecast,” according to a news release from the county on Friday.

“I strongly urge all county residents and property owners to be attentive to the condition of their properties through proactive fire prevention measures,” said Doyle Sanford, Lewis County fire marshal, in the release. “Always have fire-extinguishing equipment readily available and supervise all outdoor fires until they’re completely out.”

Outdoor burning, even with a permit, is restricted to natural vegetation from the burn site only. Garbage, paper or other refuse is always strictly prohibited, the release stated. Debris burning in city limits and urban growth areas is not allowed.

To apply for open burning permits, head to https://burnpermit.lewiscountywa.gov or the Lewis County Fire Marshal’s office at 2025 NE Kresky Ave. in Chehalis.

State-protected forestlands throughout Washington, which includes state parks, by clicking the link, have specific restrictions through the Department of Natural Resources at www.dnr.wa.gov/burn-restrictions.

The burn status will remain in effect until modified or rescinded by the Lewis County Board of County Commissioners, followed by public announcement of any modifications, the news release stated.
