Bomb Squad Detonates Pipe Bomb Found Near Centralia

An apparent pipe bomb found by an inmate worker picking up garbage along Salzer Valley Road was detonated by the Washington State Patrol Bomb Squad Wednesday afternoon.

There were no injuries.

According to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the 1100 block of Salzer Valley Road at about 12:20 p.m. after the Lewis County Jail inmate found the device and reported it to the work crew supervisor.

It was detonated in place by the Bomb Squad at about 3:05 p.m.

The road was closed for about 10 minutes as the State Patrol explosive experts worked.

The origin of the device, along with how long it had been beside the road, is unknown, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
