On Monday, Oct. 5, at approximately 4:12 p.m., Aberdeen police officers responded to a report of a small fishing boat that had overturned in the Chehalis River approximately 50 yards offshore from Morrison Park.

A 911 caller reported that the fishing boat had capsized and that the boat’s occupant was in the water swimming near the overturned vessel.

Dispatchers advised that another fishing boat had arrived and was assisting the individual.

Aberdeen officers responded to the area from both sides of the river and requested additional assistance from the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office Boating Unit and the United States Coast Guard.

The individual was eventually able to swim to shore and then board the assisting boat. He was transported to a nearby boat launch, where members of the Aberdeen Fire Department evaluated him. No further medical treatment was reported.

With assistance from other boaters, the capsized fishing boat was towed to the boat launch and safely removed from the water.

The Aberdeen Police Department thanked the assisting boaters, the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office, the United States Coast Guard, and the Aberdeen Fire Department for their coordinated response.
