Black Hills prevails in PKs in pigtail win over Mark Morris

After 90 scoreless minutes, Black Hills’ and Mark Morris’ seasons came down to a penalty shootout.

Five Wolves stepped up to the spot in the shootout, and all five scored to send Black Hills through to the district quarterfinals with a 1-0 (5-3 PKs) victory.

“I’m really excited,” Black Hills coach Jordan Owen, who is in her first season leading the Wolves, said. “I’m really proud of my girls. This has been a great group.”

Ella Jarmin, Ciara Nichols, Sienna Perry, Lola Parkinson, and Marlie Voorhies each stepped up and delivered from the spot in the shootout.

Because the Wolves went first and Mark Morris missed one of its first four kicks, Voorhies’ shot clinched it without the need for a fifth and final shot from the Monarchs.

Owen said that the Wolves had the upper hand early when it came to offensive chances, but as the game went along, those evened out.

“Just nobody could knock that ball in,” Owen said. “Our defense played super strong. I’m really proud of our back line.”

Owen said that back at the beginning of the postseason, the team made the goal to reach the postseason. Now, with a playoff win under their belt, Owen said that everything that is yet to come is “a bonus.”

“Everything else is now amazing and awesome,” Owen said. “We’re just excited to keep playing together and that the season is not over yet.”

Black Hills (12-5) will head south to play Hockinson in the district quarterfinals on Saturday.
