The Black Hills boys and girls wrestling teams both earned victories over Tumwater on Wednesday, as both teams won their respective duals under the spotlight at Black Hills.
“I can’t remember the last time Black Hills beat Tumwater in a dual,” Black Hills coach Jason Dick said. “It was a good night for my wolfpack. I’m very proud of them.”
The girls began the night with a 60-12 win. The dual included many forfeits, but of the five matches that were contested, the Wolves won four of them.
“That was awesome of the girls,” Dick said. “We’ve been working hard on our girls program, and they’re wrestling well.”
The boys followed with a thrilling 44-35 win, one that came down to the final match.
Tumwater took a 30-10 lead, but Black Hills fought back to make it 29-28 (Tumwater lost a point due to an unsportsmanlike penalty).
Rorek Foss (120) and Cash Boos (126) came away with wins to give the Wolves the lead, but a win from Tumwater’s Alejandro Concepcion (132) put the T-Birds within striking distance going into the final match.
All Black Hills’ Evan Aguilar had to do was not get pinned to seal the win, but the freshman did one better. He won his match 21-10, sealing the win and sending the gym into a frenzy.
“I thought the whole team was going to mug him,” Dick said with a laugh. “The whole gym exploded … He’s learning very fast.”
Another Black Hills highlight came at 175, when Ammon Combs overcame a 10-2 and pinned Tumwater’s Cash Short.
