Big plays help Morton roll past Oakville

When planning for Morton’s return to the eight-man game, Morton coach Lee Metcalf and his players knew that they would have more grass to work with offensively.

The Huskies took full advantage of that space on Friday night against Oakville, breaking off several long touchdown runs in a 70-6 blowout win over the Acorns.

Morton scored nine touchdowns on the night, and seven of them were 50 yards or more.

Another way 36 yards, and the ninth was from one yard out.

Liam Pelletier ran for 137 yards and two touchdowns on just three carries, and Logan Mays added 118 yards and two scores on two carries. Decklen Kelly finished with 81 yards and a touchdown, and Peyton Shields tallied 30 yards and a touchdown.

Shields and Mays also both returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

“I thought our kids ran hard, and we saw some things that we liked,” Metcalf said. “It was cool to play out in front of our home fans.”

Evan Schlesser scored Oakville’s lone touchdown of the game, breaking off a 57-yard run in the second quarter.

Next Friday, Sept. 11, Morton (1-0) will head to Puyallup to face Chief Leschi and Oakville (0-1) will host Wahkiakum.
