After a year’s absence the Scatter Creek Showdown returned to the soccer field, and the Tenino girls soccer team celebrated the occasion with a 5-2 win over their rivals from Rochester.
“I love being able to play Rochester,” Tenino coach Dave Montgomery said. “Obviously the rivalry is as old as time, but I think over the past few years it’s turned into a friendlier rivalry, which is fun.”
The Beavers (3-0) continued their torrid start on offense, bagging five more goals to bring their total up to 15 in just three matches. Last year, Tenino scored 21 goals all season.
“I’m just so happy with the offense,” Montgomery said. I have to give a shoutout to Trevor (Fetbrandt), he’s really been working with the offensive-minded players, bringing in some cool drills the past week or two that they’ve been working on. And those things that they’ve been working on in practice have shown up in a big way.”
Thursday, five different Beavers notched goals, starting with Abagail Archibald, whose goal in the 21st minute gave the hosts a 1-0 lead at the break. Before the Beavers could get their footing out of halftime, though, the Warriors (1-1) leveled the score on an Emily Beasley free kick in the 47th.
“Then we started to have some fun,” Montgomery said.
It started in the 55th minute, when a Tenino corner kick bounced off a Rochester arm in the penalty area, and freshman Callie Mickelson buried the ensuing penalty kick for her sixth goal in three matches.
Nine minutes later, Mickelson went out wide and found Kyla Watson open in the box, who made it 3-1. Two minutes after that, it was Watson’s turn for a cross; the freshman’s delivery went in to Summers, who flicked it on to Holly Thoren for the shot and the goal.
“That was pretty nice, to be knocking on the door all day long and then be able to get a couple goals back-to-back-to-back like that,” Montgomery said.
Kenna Pratt drew one back for the Warriors in the 70th, but in the 72nd, Summers got a goal to go along with her two assists on the night, making it 5-2.
Tenino will be back on the Black Top on Saturday, hosting Winlock. Rochester will be off until Tuesday, when it opens up 2A EvCo play against Rochester.
