The Tenino girls soccer team went into the set piece playbook and came out with a win Tuesday, scoring twice from restarts to get rolling in a 3-0 non-league win at Onalaska.
The Beavers got things going in the 13th minute when the ball went out of touch deep in the attacking third. Chloe Grayless took the throw-in long and got it to Callie Mickelson at the top of the penalty area, and the freshman did the rest to make it 1-0.
“The kid has a cannon,” Tenino coach Dave Montgomery said. “You can tell she’s the starting (softball) pitcher. She hucked it in there, and Callie was able to get a little space at the top of the 18 and take a shot.”
Twenty minutes later, the Kyra Dirks won a free kick down the wing, and the Beavers got another chance, which Montgomery left to senior Abagail Archibald.
“Usually Abagail doesn’t take those free kicks, but we saw something in practice and said, ‘Hey, let’s have her swing it in there,’” Montgomery said.
Archibald’s cross found Maria Summers’ forehead, and Summers’ header found the back of the net to double the lead.
“That was pretty satisfying, to be able to have a header goal this early in the season,” Montgomery said.
Mickelson added one more goal in the 65th minute, off of an assist from Holly Thoren.
The freshman already has five goals, just two games into her varsity career.
“She’s doing a wonderful job dropping back a little bit and connecting with her other forwards and wingers,” Montgomery said. “She’s playing at a higher clip than her age would say.”
Onalaska’s Hailee Brown made 12 saves between the sticks to do her best to keep the Loggers in it.
Tenino will host Rochester on the Black Top on Thursday, while Onalaska will go to Castle Rock.
