Beavers Record Draw in Season Opener with Chelan

Though it ended in a scoreless draw with Chelan, the Tenino girls soccer team finally got its season going, with a lot of new faces and names stepping into new roles.

The Beavers had several chances to score in the opening minutes, but failed to make the final pass or finish it to get on the board. Despite that, the Beavs backline played well, per coach Dave Montgomery, and Trinity Tafoya had five saves.

A lot of credit needs to go to our backline,” Montgomery said. “MJ Gallwas was good in organizing our backline, freshman Chloe Grayless broke up a lot of Chelan's advances in the midfield, and freshman Tamara Snodderly filled in the back admirably when she came off the bench. Nicole Fralick also did a fantastic job as a holding midfielder.”

Montgomery said that the Beavers had a few high quality chances, including a cross that was just out of reach of a Tenino forward, a misplaced corner kick chance, and a spilled save that Chelan’s keeper wrangled in before damage could be done on the scoreboard.

“We had several break away opportunities throughout the game but just needed to be able to make that final pass going forward,” Montgomery said. “Everything we're trying to do in our offense was right there though. It was pretty exciting.

“I'm really proud of how many of these players have latched onto new roles. It's going to be a lot of fun when we start firing on all cylinders.”

The Beavers take on King’s Way Christian next on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
