Beavers overcome sluggish start to top Tigers in five

The Tenino volleyball team got off to a rough start against Centralia at home on Tuesday, but the Beavers bounced back for an 11-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-18, 15-5 win.

“We still have a lot of work to do communication wise,” Tenino coach Shauna Carpenter said. “But we found a great rotation tonight that should help carry us through league.”

Sequoia Zimmer doled out 22 assists while also tallying 13 digs and five aces and serving 20 for 20 from the service line.

Jaeleen Woodward went 16 for 17 from the line with 11 digs, and Violet Zimmer went 20 for 23 with five aces. Katen Burkhardt logged 20 kills and 19 digs, and Kendall Bowe recorded six kills and three blocks.

A rotation error led the Tigers to playing the first set with multiple players out of position, which kicked off what Centralia coach Marti Smith called “a really weird match.”

“We were really discombobulated, but yet we pulled it out,” Smith said. “I think it forced them to have to communicate better since people were not in their usual spots.”

Makenzie Erickson went 13 for 14 from the line while also logging 14 digs, and Brooklyn Sprague went 18 for 19 with 20 digs, eight kills, and six aces.

McKenna Smith tallied 15 digs, six kills, and two blocks, while Ceinna Arelong had 11 digs and Ryleigh Butler recorded four kills.

While there were plenty of bright spots, Smith did say that it was a little frustrating how it never seemed to all come together.

“It was one thing working, but not the other,” Smith said. “It was never where we had everything working at the same time. We just couldn’t put anything together.”

“The girls just keep plugging away though,” Smith added. “They know that they’re still in it. I’m gonna give my girls credit for that.”

Tenino (3-4) will be at home again on Wednesday to host W.F. West. Centralia (2-3) will head to Aberdeen on Tuesday.
