The Tenino girls soccer team took what it practiced on the training ground and turned it into a win Tuesday, scoring three goals from set pieces in a 7-1 win over Toledo.
“It was cool to see the girls really get after it inside of the box, and really want to get the ball and score a goal,” Tenino head coach Dave Montgomery said.
Both of the first two goals for the Beavers (5-0) came off of corner kicks, with Natalie Lucero heading home Kyra Dirks’ delivery in the fourth minute and Allison Kalkus depositing one off a scrum in the box.
Then, the match turned to sophomore defensive midfielder Chloe Grayless.
In the 38th minute, Grayless took a drop from Kyle Watson and banged a 25-yard bomb into the net for her first career goal to make it 3-0 just before halftime. Coming out of the break, the Beavers earned a penalty and missed it, but Grayless was there to pounce on the rebound and score.
Then in the 57th, Tenino combined its two offensive themes, with Grayless scoring on a corner kick to seal her hat trick.
“I’m really happy for Chloe,” Montgomery said. “Not to just get her first goal — which was a banger — but to get a hat trick to open up her scoring account. That was exciting.”
Abagail Archibald and Callie Mickeslon scored the final two goals for Tenino, while Quyn Norberg got Toledo on the board on a free kick in the second half.
Tenino will get another non-league match against a Central 2B League team when it hosts Adna on Thursday, while Toledo will get eight days off before playing at Raymond-South Bend.
