The Tenino baseball team escaped University Place with a win on Monday, as the Beavers held off Charles Wright Academy for a 7-6 victory.
The two teams were tied at one through four, but a six-run fifth put Tenino up 7-1.
The first two Beavers in the fifth were retired, but the next nine batters reached base to keep the rally alive. Austin Gonia brought home two on a double, two more came across on a Michael Vassar double, and another pair scored on a Preston Snider single.
The Tarriers didn’t go down quietly, though. They scored two in the sixth to enter the final frame down four, and with just one out in the seventh, they got within one and had the tying and winning runs on base.
Zeke Haskins was able to get out of the jam, striking out one Tarrier for Out No. 2 before getting another to ground out to end the game.
Gonia went 2 for 4 at the plate with his two runs batted in, and he also allowed just four hits and one run in five innings on the mound.
The Beavers (2-0) will return home for another non-league test on Saturday, when they’ll host Overlake.
