Beavers drop 8 on Grizzlies

The Tenino girls soccer team made the bus ride out to Grays Harbor worth it Thursday, smacking Hoquiam 8-0 in 1A Evergreen play to snap a four-game skid and earn its first win of league play.

“It was nice to finally get some goals in the back of the net and pick up a W,” Tenino coach Dave Montgomery said. “Obviously, we still have some bigger games ahead of us to focus on. But it was nice to be able to focus on some things tonight.”

Callie Mickelson got the scoring started in the second minute and proceeded to score every other goal for the Beavers (6-4-1, 1-2-0 1A Evergreen); she also logged an assist.

Kyla Watson scored two goals of her own, and Chloe Grayless and Abagail Archibald both added one.

The Beavers blitzed the Grizzlies right out of the gate to make it 2-0 just five minutes in, but that’s where the scoreline stood 25 minutes later, leaving Montgomery wanting more.

“That was super promising, but we kind of let off the gas pedal for a little bit,” he said. “So we talked about that at halftime, and the girls came out and really gave it a go in the second half, and were able to play our brand of soccer.”

The switch even started a bit before the break, with two goals in the final 10 minutes of the half. Then, the Beavers scored four more in the first 25 minutes of the second, before finally letting up a bit.

Tenino will face its last non-league match of the season Saturday, at home against Ilwaco. The Beavers will reenter 1A Evergreen action Tuesday against Eatonville.
