Beavers can’t overcome slow start, fall to Rockets

The Tenino girls basketball team couldn’t overcome a slow start against Castle Rock on Friday, as the Beavers fell 42-32.

The Beavers (1-6) scored just three points in the first quarter, and the Rockets quickly opened up a 12-point lead.

“We came out slow on offense,” Tenino coach Scott Ashmore said. “We couldn’t make anything in the first quarter. We missed a lot of easy shots.”

After the first quarter, Tenino was right in the game. They outscored the Rockets 29-27 over the final three quarters, but the early hole was too big to climb out of.

“We played hard for four quarters,” Ashmore said. “It was good to see.”

Perhaps what cost the Beavers the most was their struggles at the free throw line, as they shot just 12 for 24 from the charity stripe.

Brianna Asay led the Beavers with 17 points, and Holly Thoren added seven.

The Beavers are back in action on Monday, when they’ll head north to take on Black Hills.
