Beavers can’t get past similar slow start against Bulldogs

TENINO — When the Tenino and Montesano girls soccer teams first met on Sept. 25, the Bulldogs took control immediately with two goals in the first two minutes of the game.

The Beavers didn’t fall behind that quickly on Tuesday in the rematch, but they did give up three goals in the first half of their 3-0 loss.

Montesano got on the board in the sixth minute, added a second in the 16th, and made it 3-0 in the 33rd.

“The girls came out super fired up,” Tenino co-head coach Trevor Fetbrandt said. “Today is a great example of not only how much better we’ve gotten, but the importance of the details when you’re playing teams of this quality.”

Fetbrandt pointed out a few critical mistakes, which included failing to step up on a shooter at the top of the box and missing a run from behind towards the ball, which led to the early goals.

Like the first meeting, the Beavers had their chances to get back in the game.

Callie Mickelson generated multiple chances early, including a shot that grazed the crossbar and another that just went wide of the post.

“She was gonna put the team on her back if she could,” Tenino co-head coach Dave Montgomery said. “That was really cool to see out of her, the competitive spirit she has. If she plays like that, she’s going to score a ton of more goals before the season is over.”

Kyla Watson had a free kick that got through towards three Beavers near the back post, but all three missed and the ball sailed wide again.

“We definitely felt like we could have gotten a couple there,” Fetbrandt said.

The second half turned into a “stalemate.” Not only did neither team find the back of the net, but chances were few and far between.

“The second half makes you feel that you’re figuring it back out,” Fetbrandt said. “It’s a good testament to our girls and their grit.”

Both Montgomery and Fetbrandt praised the play from Georgia Gore on the back line, saying it was the best that the freshman center back has played all season.

Fetbrandt gave kudos to her for bouncing back after an early mistake, while Montgomery said that it’s really cool to see how her growth has played out in real time in the recent weeks.

While the Beavers would have loved to get this one and move into a tie for first, both coaches are still confident in this group moving forward.

“Nothing changes for us,” Montgomery said. “We can still win out, get second in our league, and host a playoff game. If we can win one of those, we’ll be here Saturday at districts. Everything is still in front of us.”

Tenino (8-3-2, 3-2 1A Evergreen) will hit the road on Thursday to face Elma.
