The Tenino girls soccer team’s unbeaten run to open the regular season ended in Cowlitz County on Monday at six games, in a 5-0 loss to Kalama.
"We knew going into this that Kalama is a fantastic team, and this would be no easy game," Tenino coach Dave Montgomery said.
The Beavers (5-1-1) went into the matchup against the 2021 2B state champions — one of the favorites to win it again this year — down a couple of pieces due to nagging injuries, and kep the match within a goal for the opening half.
“Given our circumstances I thought we played really well to have them just down 1-0 at halftime,” Montgomery said. “But after that, we just ran out of steam.”
The Chinooks scored nine minutes out of halftime, then added to their lead in the 54th, 59th, and 64th minutes to put it well out of reach.
Dakota Lees made six saves for Tenino.
“It was a good game for us just in that it was a really good learning experience to have some girls of that quality coming at us,” Montgomery said.
The Beavers will get another test against a 2B state contender Thursday, when it goes to Bremerton to take on Crosspoint Academy.
