The Tenino girls soccer team had to head south for a pigtail game on Saturday, but the Beavers returned home with a 2-1 win (3-1 PKs) over Kalama.
Goalkeepers Allison Kalkus and Gracelyn Sweet led the way, as Kalkus made 15 saves in regulation and extra time before Sweet allowed just one goal in the penalty shootout.
“I gave them both a hug after the game,” Tenino coach Dave Montgomery said. “I was just super proud of both of them. We couldn’t really go wrong (in the shootout).”
Callie Mickelson opened the scoring in the 69th minute off a corner from Paisley Garcia, but Kalama’s Bridgette Hollifield drew a foul in the box and converted the ensuing PK just one minute later.
“It was a little bit annoying,” Montgomery admitted with a laugh. “But we told the girls all week that we would have a chance in this one.”
Holly Thoren just missed a header seconds into the first half of extra time, and that was the closest either of the two teams got to breaking the deadlock before the shootout.
Montgomery called it “a complete team game,” listing off several players that stood out to him.
“Mickelson and Thoren played excellent up top,” Montgomery said. “(Maria) Summer and (Nessa) Culp were excellent on the wings … The attacking band and our midfield were just lights out today. It was a really fun one to watch.”
The Beavers (8-8-1) will have to hit the road again for their quarterfinal matchup, as they’ll head south to face Seton Catholic on Tuesday.
