The W.F. West boys’ basketball team couldn’t close out Ridgefield on Thursday, losing 52-51 after entering the fourth quarter with a 12-point lead.

The Bearcat (0-1) defense had been stout all game prior to the final frame, allowing just 25 points in the first three quarters, but Ridgefield’s Cole Chester and Colten Castro caught fire in the fourth quarter and led a late offensive surge.

Chester was Ridgefield’s leading scorer throughout, scoring a game-high 27 points, while Castro scored nine of the Spudders’ 27 points in the fourth quarter.

Lucas Hoff scored a team-high 14 points, Parker Eiswald added 11 and Tyler Klatush tallied nine.

The Bearcats will play their first league game of the season on Tuesday, when they head to Rochester.
