Bearcats prevail in ‘grinder’ over Highclimbers

The W.F. West boys basketball team took care of business in its home opener on Thursday night, topping Shelton 54-41.

The Bearcats (2-1, 2-0 2A EvCo) took a 20-5 lead after a quarter, thanks in large part to two threes from Tyler Klatush and one from Lucas Hoff. Hoff and Gage Brumfield added threes in the second quarter, but the Highclimbers kept it close and prevented the game from getting out of hand.

W.F. West was able to keep Shelton at arms length, however, hanging on for the double-digit win.

“It was a solid defensive effort, and there was some early hot shooting,” W.F. West coach Chris White said. “Kind of a grinder down the stretch, but we were able to gut it out and take care of the ball.”

Klatush finished with 18 points and five assists, while Parker Eiswald scored 13 and came down with eight rebounds.

Brumfield finished with 10 points and also added five assists, while Grady Westlund led the team with nine rebounds.

The Bearcats are back in action on Monday in Mint City, where they will host 4A Battle Ground.
