The W.F. West football team made its entrance into the win column in its 2A EvCo debut Friday, pulling away from Shelton 55-26 with a strong stretch in the second half.

The Bearcats broke a 14-14 tie with a second left on the clock in the second quarter on a 3-yard pass from Gage Brumfield to Carson White to go into halftime with momentum, and came out of the locker room roaring. Brumfield started the surge with a 24-yard run, before the Chehalis backfield duo of Declan McDonald and Tucker Land went to work, pairing up for three more touchdowns to make it 48-14 before the Highclimbers could get back in the end zone.

Brumfield led the way on the ground with 98 yards and two touchdowns. McDonald got in twice and had 86 yards, Land scored once on his 15 carries, and Spencer Cole added the Bearcats’ final touchdown on the day on an 11-yard run that made it 55-20.

Brumfield also went 15 for 22 through the air for 166 yards; in addition to his toss to White at the end of the first half, he also hit Grady Westlund for a 19-yard touchdown.

The W.F. West defense forced a pair of turnovers on the day, coming down with an interception and recovering a fumble.

The Bearcats (1-2, 1-0 2A EvCo) will try to turn the one win into momentum next week when they host Black Hills.
