Bearcats fall to Seahawks in state semifinals

W.F. West’s state tournament run came to an end in Oak Harbor on Saturday, as the Bearcats fell to Anacortes 35-13 in a 2A semifinal.

Anacortes will play for its second straight state championship next Saturday, Dec. 7 at Husky Stadium in Seattle.

“Hats are off to Anacortes,” W.F. West coach Dan Hill said.

Anacortes’ Brady Beaner opened the scoring on just the third play of the game, and his brother Brock Beaner made it 14-0 with a rushing touchdown of his own later in the first quarter.

The W.F. West offense was able to move the ball well at times in the first half, including its first drive of the game, but a fumble ended that possession before the Bearcats got into the red zone.

On their final drive of the half, the Bearcats made it into the red zone, but stalled on a fourth and long. Anacortes added seven before the break to go up 21-0.

“We had an opportunity to score and just missed a catch by two inches,” Hill said. “You get that, it’s 14-7 at half. But it’s football, and they’re a good football team.”

By the time W.F. West got on the board in the fourth quarter, the Seahawks had extended their lead to 35.

Brumfield hit Grady Westlund on a 14-yard passing touchdown, and he capped his high school football career with a 63-yard rush less than a minute later.

He finished with 242 total yards and the two touchdowns, while Westlund finished with five catches and 44 yards plus his score. Tucker Land finished with a team-high 70 yards on five catches.

Land, Westlund, and Brumfield are part of a 16-player senior class, one that led the Bearcats to an 11-2 season and their second semifinal appearance in three years.

“The senior leadership has been second to none this year,” Hill said. “They’ve grown up and they’re a quality group of young men … I’m very proud of the young men that've become.”
