Bearcats earn first win of season

The W.F. West girls soccer team broke its goose egg Tuesday in Chehalis, running away with a 4-0 win over Shelton to get into the victory column in its 2A EvCo opener.

“We were all over them,” said first-year head coach Kevin Schultz, who earned his first win at the helm for the Bearcats. “It was a good game for us. We passed the ball well and created some good chances.”

Ashlen Gruginski gave the Bearcats (1-3, 1-0 2A EvCo) the lead in the 13th minute, playing up through the midfield.

“Ashlen and Wyatt (Rogerson) in the middle of the field were all over the place and set the tempo for us,” Schultz said.

Lena Fragner added a goal in the 36th minute, and for the first time this season, W.F. West went into the locker room at halftime ahead.

“We set some more team goals at half to make sure we stayed focused,” Schultz said. “But having the lead at half, it puts you in a different mindset than when it’s 0-0 and you’re one step away from being behind.”

Things kept up for the Bearcats in the second, who dominated possession the whole night. W.F. West snapped off 26 shots on target, to Shelton’s four — all of which were saved by Staysha Fluetsch.

Kylee Breen converted a penalty kick to get the scoring started again in the 71st minute, and Zoey Robertson capped off the night with one more goal in the 78th.

W.F. West will hit the road and chase the setting sun Thursday, going to Aberdeen for another league match.
