Bearcats Drop Another One to Bobcats

The W.F. West girls soccer team’s second shot at Aberdeen didn’t go much better than the first, as the Bearcats fell 2-1 in Grays Harbor County on Tuesday.

Coach Allen Anderson said that the Bearcats — who came into the day with an extra chip on their shoulder after losing 3-2 to the Bobcats back in September — struggled out of the gate after the long bus ride northwest. But W.F. West did shake off the rust in time to take a lead late in the first half, when the visitors won a free kick and Maddie Shields buried it home to give them a 1-0 lead going into the break.

It would last long after it, though. Aberdeen came out firing to tie the game in the 48th minute, then came right back and stunned its guests in the go-ahead goal just two minutes later, completely flipping the game on its head.

Anderson said that Kallie Hitch and Brielle Etter led the Bearcat back line — which played a good game with the exception of the three crucial minutes. But W.F. West couldn’t string anything of consequence together in the attacking third late, and ultimately was shut out in the second half to take the loss.

W.F. West (6-5, 5-3 2A EvCo) will get back to work Thursday at Tumwater. The Bearcats fell 3-0 to the T-Birds in their first matchup of the year.
