The W.F. West girls basketball team had no issues with long-term rust from the offseason or short-term rust from the bus ride to Longview on Tuesday, opening its winter with a 73-14 blowout of R.A. Long in a non-league matchup.

“I think there are obviously things to work on… but lots of good things,” WFW coach Kyle Karnofski said. “Lots of sharing the ball, and it’s good to be able to come down and start the year off with a win on the road.”

Julia Dalan started her junior season off in dominant fashion, leading all scorers with 26 points.

Behind her in the scoring column for the Bearcats (1-0) came freshmen Kaitlyn Chloupek and Dilyn Boeck, who began their varsity careers with 15 and 13 points, respectively.

“For their first varsity game, that was really cool to see,” Karnofski said. “I thought they gave us a really good spark.”

Lena Fragner added 12 points to make it four Bearcats in double figures.

W.F. West led 24-6 after a quarter of play and 46-10 at halftime. The Lumberjacks managed four more points in the third quarter, but the Bearcats blanked their hosts in the final eight minutes.

The Bearcats will be off until Saturday, when they take on Port Angeles at home.
