Bearcats Best Tigers in Rivalry Match

W.F. West girls tennis swept all the singles matches and nabbed one doubles match to claim a 4-2 home victory over rival Centralia in 2A Evergreen Conference action on Friday.

In No. 1 singles, W.F. West’s Claire Kuykendall defeated Centralia’s Evie Rooklidge, 6-0, 6-4.

“Evie started hitting drop shots, spliced and back spins,” W.F. West coach Jack State said. “It was a good play for Evie because she got handled in the first set.”

In No. 2 singles, W.F. West’s Laura Yip defeated Centralia’s Olivia Wiley, 6-1, 6-1.

“Laura did an excellent job,” State said. “She’s really improved so much.”

In No. 3 singles, W.F. West’s Hannah Feaster defeated Centralia’s Maya Lackie, 6-3, 6-2.

“Hannah lost the first couple games in both sets then came back,” State said.



On the doubles side, Centralia duo Liza Hopkins and Maddie Corwin defeated W.F West’s Kaylynne Dowling and Mari Ceesay in No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 6-1.

“Kaylynne and Mari played well,” State said. “They had a number of good sets.”

In No. 2 doubles, Centralia’s Maya O’Dell and Serene Stehr defeated W.F. West’s Emma Hamilton and Cadence Edminster, 6-1, 6-3.

In No. 3 doubles, W.F. West’s Katelyn Wood and Emma Weerasinghe defeated Centralia’s Olivia Norris and Sophia Wiley, 6-1, 6-2.

“The match went pretty much like I thought it might,” State said. “It was a good, close match.”

W.F. West (8-1, 6-1 EvCo) hosts Aberdeen on Monday. Centralia heads to Black Hills on Monday.
