A 26-year-old Chehalis man is facing felony charges in Lewis County Superior Court after allegedly punching and kicking his roommate before stealing his cellphone and fleeing on Monday, Jan. 5.
Andrew Ray Segerman made his first appearance in Lewis County Superior Court via video on Tuesday, Jan. 6. His bail was set at $50,000 by Judge Joely Yeager.
Segerman is charged with first-degree robbery — a felony strike offense punishable by up to life in prison and a $50,000 fine — as well as third-degree theft, a misdemeanor punishable by up to 364 days in jail and a $5,000 fine.
A Lewis County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to the 900 block of Logan Hill Road for a report of an assault at about 10:52 p.m. Jan. 5. The reporting party told the deputy that he was assaulted by his roommate, Segerman, who fled the scene.
The roommate said Segerman has been known to steal items and use narcotics. He said he observed the glow of a cellphone outside the residence before he went outside and confronted Segerman, accusing him of stealing his phone.
When the roommate demanded the phone back, Segerman allegedly “punched him in the face with a closed fist,” according to court documents. Segerman then allegedly kicked the roommate twice while he was on the ground before fleeing the scene on foot, taking the phone. The victim had bruising under his eye when speaking to the deputy.
The deputy, joined by other deputies and a K9, spent more than an hour searching the area for Segerman without success. Law enforcement left only to be called back a short time later when Segerman returned to the residence and began tapping on a window, according to court documents.
The deputy returned, but was unable to find Segerman.
“(The deputy) decided to park his vehicle down the road and walk back to the residence under the cover of darkness,” court documents state. “While approaching (the) residence, he observed a male outside the residence that he recognized as Segerman. Segerman was arrested and stated he left (the) phone at the neighbor's property. Segerman guided (the deputy) to the phone, which was recovered (along with a second phone). Segerman was searched incident to arrest and two bank cards were found on his person that were not in his name. The owners of the cards are in the process of being contacted.”
At the court appearance Tuesday, Judge Yeager said “the allegations here at hand are what are of concern to the court.” She then agreed with the prosecution to set bail at $50,000. Segerman remains held at the Lewis County Jail.
Segerman has a warrant for his arrest out of Stevens County, but otherwise has no felony criminal history. He has had a total of 22 warrants for his arrest on other matters, though.
His arraignment is scheduled for Thursday.
