Authorities announced up to $15,000 in rewards to anyone with information leading to an arrest in the April shooting that killed a 13-year-old boy sleeping in a Gresham apartment.
At a Thursday news conference, Gresham police officials said the U.S. Marshals Service is offering $5,000 rewards for information that leads to the arrest of Anthony Hunter Jr., 21, Xavier Hirsch, 20, or Terrell Coy, 17, who all have ties to the Portland area but also Nevada, Arizona and Texas.
All three are accused of second-degree murder in connection with the April 27 shooting in which a stray bullet struck and killed 13-year-old Liam Spahnle-Bailey, who was sleeping on an air mattress in the living room of a second-floor apartment at the Eleven Pines apartment complex on Southwest 11th Street.
Police said Hunter has connections to Las Vegas and the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Hirsch also has connections to Dallas Fort-Worth, and Coy has connections to Salem and the Phoenix and Tucson areas.
“This is obviously a challenging investigation when you have multiple suspects involved that have connections throughout the country,” said Detective Adam Wright.
The shooting took place inside another second-floor apartment at the Eleven Pines complex around 1:30 a.m.. Multiple rounds went through the walls, striking Liam and wounding another person who was later released from a hospital.
“He was a child, bright, joyful and full of promise,” said Gresham police Assistant Chief Andrew Shearer. “That morning, Liam was planning to go snowboarding with his family but instead his life was stolen by a senseless act of violence.”
Liam attended Rowe Middle School, and his father told media outlets that he loved skateboarding and snowboarding. His family attended the press conference but didn’t speak.
Police have not revealed what led to the shooting, and officials declined to speak of the specifics.
Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez said he is calling for justice for Liam. He added that if anyone is hiding the suspects, his office will prosecute them as well.
“This family, this community deserves justice and this needs to come to an end with those individuals being brought into custody,” Vasquez said.
Police ask anyone with information on the suspects’ whereabouts to email Detective Martin Daly at martin.daly@greshamoregon.gov and Detective Lindsay Friderich at lindsay.friderich@greshamoregon.gov.
