Area wrestlers unable to go far at Fargo

Despite the in-state resumes of Sloane Kruger, Lucy Hornby and the Reinitz sisters of Ramona and Eva, the four local girls never found their footing to earn All-American status at the most prestigious tournament in wrestling.

The area quartet all went 2-2 in their respective weight classes through the first two days of the 2025 U.S. Marine Corps Junior Nationals held inside the FargoDome on North Dakota State’s campus.

Kruger, a Black Hills alum and recent signee to Presbyterian College, got the farthest on the championship side, reaching the Round of 16 in the 100-pound junior freestyle bracket. She upended Ohio’s Reagan Radtke by tech fall and Iowa’s Chloe Sheffield via a 12-6 verdict.

The Mat Classic XXXVI state champ was pinned by California’s Jaelle Cortez in 3 minutes, 59 seconds then on the back side, fell to New Jersey’s Madison Rucci in 5:30.

Hornby and the Reinitz sisters were in the 16U freestyle division. At 110-pounds, both Eva Reinitz and Hornby’s tournaments ended in a heartbreaking way.

Eva, a Centralia grappler,  was coming off a 56-second pin to stay alive on the consolation side and led California’s Aya Yoshitake 6-3 late before a comeback with four seconds left in the match lifted Yoshitake to a 7-6 triumph. Eva won one championship side match, a 23-second fall against Ella Als of Iowa.

Hornby gave up three takedowns to New Jersey’s Grey Henecker and attempted a rally with a takedown with 20 seconds left, but never got the turn needed and fell 6-3 in her tournament-ending match. The W.F. West athlete beat Iowa’s Lauren Watson 16-8 and Pennsylvania’s Clementine O’Brien by a 16-4 tech fall.

At 120, Centralia’s Ramona Reinitz wrestled just three times with one win by medical forfeit. She lost a wild opening match to Nebraska’s Rylan Custrard 13-10, then pinned Texas’ Delilah Coyle in 23 seconds. Ramona’s run ended with a 7-3 loss to California’s Noemi Cordero 7-3.

On the boys side, Napavine’s Peyton Hernandez will compete at 132 in both junior freestyle and Greco-Roman.
